Texas DPS scheduler: road test option greyed out? Causes and fixes (2026)

The short answer
DPS doesn’t publish a list of reasons the Class C road test button goes grey, so start with the rules it does publish. You must have applied for a license before you can schedule a road test[1], and you must log in with your assigned Texas driver license number[3]. If you’ve failed the test, a 90-day / three-attempt limit applies to your application[4]. If those are fine, Texans report three workarounds: the scheduler’s “I am required to take a road test” option, the “Service Not Listed” option (which DPS itself recommends when a service you need isn’t offered[2]), or asking DPS to check your record[5]. You can also skip the scheduler entirely and take the test at a DPS-authorized driving school[6].
What DPS says about scheduling a road test
- Apply first. “Do I have to apply for a driver license before I can schedule a road test? Yes.”[1] In practice that means you already hold a learner license (or a license with a B restriction), which DPS lists as item 1 to bring to the test[3].
- Use your DL number. “An assigned driver license number for the testing applicant must be entered when scheduling for a driving test.”[3]
- The phone line can’t book it. DPS says its Customer Service Center “cannot schedule, reschedule, or cancel road tests.” Use the scheduler[1].
- Up to 180 days ahead. Road tests can be booked up to 180 days in advance[1].
- Service not listed. “If the service you need is not listed in the service types provided to you, please select ‘Service Not Listed’ to schedule your appointment.”[2]
- ID card holders. Texas law lets you hold a driver license or an ID card, not both. DPS says people who hold one “will not be offered the option to schedule an appointment for the other” and must use “Service Not Listed”[2].
- After a failed test. “If you do not pass the drive test, your application will be held in the driver license office for 90 days. After 90 days — or three failed tests — a new application and fee must be submitted.”[4] DPS also says a test fee payment “is good for only 90 days”[3].
What Texans report (not DPS guidance)
- Greyed out after failing (Aug 2026). A r/driving poster failed their test, was told about a 24-hour wait before retesting, and two days later still found the option greyed out. A reply suggested trying “I am required to take a road test,” checking the scheduler a few times a day while logged in with the DL number, and waiting for DPS to answer an email, since “They may need to manually reset it from their side.”[7]
- Adult learner, button greyed out (Jan 2026). A Texas r/DMV poster with a restricted license said the road test was all they had left but the option was greyed out. A commenter relayed a DPS customer service rep’s view that there “may or may not be an issue” with the parent-taught (PTDE) or driving-hours certificates being turned in, and advised contacting DPS before booking a workaround appointment, with a reply expected in about five business days[8].
- State ID holder (2021). An r/texas poster who held a state ID found road-test options greyed out. They said DPS emailed back to choose “Service Not Listed,” and several commenters said that option worked for them. One wrote, “When you get to the DPS they don’t really care which option it was.”[9] This matches the DPS ID-card rule above[2].
Fix checklist
- Log in with your Texas DL number (the number on your learner license), not just your name and date of birth[3].
- Confirm you’ve applied and hold a learner or B-restricted license. If you haven’t applied yet, book a new-license appointment first[1].
- Failed before? Count your attempts and days since you applied. After three failures or 90 days you need a new application and fee[4].
- Hold a Texas ID card? Use “Service Not Listed”[2].
- Try the other entry points: “I am required to take a road test” or “Service Not Listed.” Users report these working[7][9], but if your record is the problem, the office may still be unable to test you. Bring every document DPS lists[3].
- Ask DPS to check your record. Use the official DPS contact form. DPS says to allow four to five working days for a reply. Or call the Customer Service Center at 512-424-2600, Monday to Friday, 7 a.m. to 5:30 p.m.; DPS says Fridays and 7–8 a.m. are the best times[5]. Include your full name, date of birth and DL number[5].
- Or skip the scheduler. DPS-authorized driving schools give the official Class C drive test and book it themselves[6]. See below.
Skip the scheduler: take the test at a driving school
Under the Third Party Skills Testing program, DPS-certified schools give the driving test, and you book with the school, not the DPS scheduler[6]. You still need to meet DPS’s eligibility rules for a school-given test (learner license, driver ed certificate if under 25, Impact Texas Drivers certificate within 90 days)[6]. If DPS hasn’t recorded a certificate, ask the school whether that will affect your test before you pay. Prices aren’t set by DPS; we show only prices schools post on their own sites.

FAQ
Why is the road test option greyed out on the Texas DPS scheduler?
DPS doesn’t publish a list of causes. Its rules require you to have applied for a license and to schedule with your assigned DL number. After three failed tests or 90 days, you need a new application. Users also report greyed-out buttons after a recent failed test, while driver ed certificates weren’t yet on file, and when they held a state ID card.
Can I pick “Service Not Listed” for a road test?
DPS says to choose Service Not Listed when the service you need isn’t offered, including for ID card holders who need a driver license. Reddit users report getting road-test appointments this way.
Can DPS customer service book my road test?
No. DPS says its Customer Service Center cannot schedule, reschedule or cancel road tests. It can look into your record if you contact it through the official form or phone line.
How soon can I retake the Texas driving test after failing?
DPS keeps your application for 90 days after a failed drive test. After 90 days or three failed tests, you must submit a new application and fee. DPS’s pages we checked don’t state a minimum wait between attempts.
